Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Saturday 28.03.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
The danger increases in those areas who receive most new snow when the wind picks up. Avoid areas with wind deposited snow, typically behind ridges, ribs and in gullies.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on many steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Friday 27. March 2020

Mountain weather

Friday 27. March 2020

4-6 mm precipitation. Moderate gale from southwest, changing to strong breeze from the southwest during renoon. -3 °C to 2 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Saturday 28. March 2020

10 mm precipitation, up to 15 mm in the most exposed areas. Gale from northwest, changing to moderate gale from the northwest during renoon. -9 °C to -2 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
